THE HUNT BEGINS FOR THE REAL KING OF FUJI MUSIC IN NIGERIA.

Fiji is an island in the Southwest Pacific, not to be confused with Fuji which is a popular Nigerian musical genre. Fuji music arose from the improvisation ‘Ajisari’ or ‘Were’ music tradition, a kind of music performed to wake Muslims before dawn during the Ramadan fasting season.

‘Were’ music or ‘Ajisari’ itself was made popular by the late Alhaji Sikiru Ayiinde Barrister, and it is vastly listened to across the south western parts of Nigeria and has been exported all over the world in the last twenty years.

This genre was popularized by musicians such as Alhaji Dauda Epo-Akara in Ibadan who was also the founder of Awurebe music, Ganiyu Kuti (also known as Gani Irefin).

Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister is considered the creator of Fuji music and was a former student of Jibowu Barrister who was an Ajiwere music performer.

The late Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister was the defacto king until his death and to his credit he raised a lot of heirs to the throne, but Alhaji Kollington contested the crown with barrister, claiming instead to be the true creator of Fuji music.

Who is the new king?

This is the big question in the mind of every Nigeria Fuji fan. Is it King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, Abass Akande Obesere, King Saheed Osupa, King Sule Alao Malaika, Adewale Ayuba, Sina Akanni or Sefiu Alao?

Fuji music has continued to attract younger generations in Nigeria; below the list of popular modern Fuji musicians in Nigeria says it all:

The top contenders to the throne are also numerous, but it doesn’t take much to separate the pretenders to the throne.

KWAM1

The artiste formerly known as KWAM1 (King Wasiu Ayinde Marshal 1) now known as K1 the Ultimate was the heir apparent to the throne, but the race will prove his ability to endure the heirdom and the throne. He is the first Mayegun of Yorubaland as appointed by His Imperial Majesty, Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi. Musically he is there as a leader in the music genre.

ADEWALE AYUBA (Mr Johnson)

He is a proponent of the ‘Bonsue Fuji’ genre and he debuted in the early 90s with his very successful ‘Bubble’ album, but has maintained his course and relevance, and detaching himself from the contention for the crown.

ALABI PASUMA

He is also a strong contender for the crown.

ABASS AKANDE OBESERE

This Asakasa exponent came to fame with his lewd ribald singing and cross-dressing video in his OKOKORIKO and APPLE JUICE albums and marketing by Bayowa records.

SAHEED OSUPA

He represents the highest selling Fuji act in the last two years and he released a 4-in-1 album titled ‘Mr Music’ to entrench himself as the final word in the hierarchy of Fuji music.

Some considerations while looking for the genuine king of fuji might include the lyrics, drums, dance, album sales, street credibility, connections, achievements, innovation, or music composition in general

Alhaji Sikiru Ayinde Barrister had when alive chose Saheed Osupa as the king of music, because of his lyrical depth, lessons and poetry in his delivery.

This choice did not go down well with all, as the old horse, Sikiru Ayinde Marshall is older in the game and has brought a lot of rebranding to the genre.

Wasiu still hold the wealthiest fan section of the Fuji fan base, he is a big boy in his own rights and created a new group out of the Fuji musician association called the “ARABAMBI FAMILY”.

The Arabambi family are believed to be a combination of Wasiu Ayinde supporters in the industry and his fellow fuji musician who look up to him or believe he is the true King of the Fuji Throne.

The Arabambi Family is like the Italian mafia family, but music and fame instead of guns.

Alabi Pasuma, the first fuji Globacom Ambassador is Arabambi 2 (though he has since denounced the family and proclaimed himself Oganla 1)

Taiye Currency is Arabambi 3

Safejo Amama is Arabambi Speaker

Sefiu Alao is Aramambi plus

Lanre Teriba Atorise is Arabambi gospel

These and other fuji musicians pledge their allegiance to King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall by officially speaking to their PR officer, or playing gigs with him across the country.

Saheed Osupa also has his own supporters within the Fuji musicians’ association, he also created his own gang, THE OLUFIMO FAMILY.

Wasiu Ayinde’s past enemy, Abass Akande Obesere, has been a big supporter of Saheed Osupa, having fought for the throne himself in the past, but claimed Wasiu Ayinde is fond of putting other fuji musician below him and knocking them out of competition.

A lot of them do not see eye to eye and are sworn enemies and the question is asked if the crown is more important than their individual lives. Almost all of them have at one time or the other been at war with each other, but there seems to be a truce and calm in the land, as even Saheed publicly acknowledges K1 as his boss.

A list of the richest fuji musicians and their net worth puts KWAM 1 at the top with over eight hundred million naira.

Silence, the king is in the building.

Let's hear from you
